Tasty Finds: Yojimbo Sushi

In our quest for awesome Japanese food, Ryan and I visited Yojimbo Sushi last weekend on a friend Neil’s recommendation, and we loved it so much that we went again tonight for dinner. It’s a tiny restaurant located in Downtown Alameda. The entry opens into the open kitchen on the left, and a narrow corridor straight ahead leads to a set of tables in the back. My favorite part about the layout was the wall decorations: the walls were covered with hand-painted movie characters who looked true to form. I also liked the selection of Japanese anime movies playing on the TV in the far corner, such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

The service was attentive and friendly, and the food was AWESOME.

We started off with a salad appetizer, then had the pork ramen and gyoza combo which was fantastic.

The pork was tender and fresh, and matched the salty/spiced soup well. The ramen was soft with a bit of chewiness which I prefer. Ok, I know I said Norikonoko had the best ramen, but this ramen is a good tie. They’re both very different; Nori’s has a more home-made feel and is simpler in taste and ingredients while Yojimbo’s has more spices and different veggies. Overall, a great dish.

We also got the unagi don-buri and dragon roll, which were delicious.

The portions overall were generous and I found the prices to be about the same or even a bit cheaper than other Japanese restaurants I’ve tried. But, the unique flavors with competitive pricing really make this a great place to try. Ryan and I will definitely be returning!
